Book Review of 108 Pearls to Awaken Your Healing Potential

Book Review of 108 Pearls to Awaken Your Healing Potential

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

I'm a skeptic when it comes to health information.

I've seen big changes in the health and wellness field over the past 30 years. When I was a teenager, our diet information was the four food groups and only registered dieticians were quoted in the media. With the Internet, now people can offer advice as health coaches and nutritionists. Do we have access to better information now? Absolutely yes, but we also have to check the source of that information. As a result, I look for published, peer-reviewed research to back up advice and yes, I still want my health care professional to have a college degree.

The downside - I shut myself off from some potentially valuable information and advice!

When I picked up '108 Pearls to Awaken Your Healing Potential,' I was glad it was authored by San Diego Integrative Cardiologist Dr. Mimi Guarneri. There's some pretty interesting alternative healing-style information, and it made me comfortable that the person writing about it was fully trained in Western medicine. I have met Dr. Gaurneri several times and trust her judgement.

I guess that's what it really comes down to. Trust.

Plastic Surgery Book Review: The Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion

How Should I Choose a Cosmetic Surgeon?

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

The book The Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion by Robert Kotler, MD, FACS is an excellent resource for patients just beginning to do their research on which doctor should perform their plastic surgery. Dr. Kotler advises that clients choose a 'superspecialist,' a physician with advanced training that limits his or her practice to only cosmetic surgery (versus reconstruction or birth defects).

What do I ask on the phone or in the consultation with a plastic surgeon?

The biggest value in this book is the extensive lists of questions Dr. Kolter recommends that potential plastic surgery clients ask cosmetic surgeons during the initial consultation. With this book in hand, potential clients can gather the information they need to screen which doctors to meet with for a consultation as well as which doctor to choose for the procedure itself.

In this video, Dr. Kotler talks about how to choose a cosmetic surgeon:

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery also put together a list of questions to ask a plastic surgeon here: http://www.americanboardcosmeticsurgery.org/5-essential-questions-for-cosmetic-surgery-consult/

Book Review: Two Girlfriends Get Real About Cosmetic Surgery: A woman-to-woman guide to today's most popular cosmetic procedures

Should I Have a Tummy Tuck, Facelift or Liposuction?

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

I recently read a very well-known book about plastic surgery titled ‘Two Girlfriends Get Real About Cosmetic Surgery: A woman-to-woman guide to today's most popular cosmetic procedures.’
The “girlfriends” are Charlee Ganny, a plastic surgery client and Susan J. Collini, who has experience managing a plastic surgery practice. The book, published in 2000, provides overviews of plastic surgery procedures including liposuction, tummy tucks, and facelifts. What is there to learn from a book that was published over 16 years ago? Though plastic surgery is becoming more accepted, especially in the San Diego area, the authors’ experience of deciding if surgery is right for them and dealing with the reactions of friends and family members feels like it could have been written in 2017. Read this book to learn from their perspective, especially if you are a mother considering a tummy tuck or mommy makeover.

The girlfriends provide advice on liposuction, tummy tuck and facelift procedures both before surgery and for recovery after surgery. Of course, every patient should follow their plastic surgeon’s advice to the letter. The girlfriends and the ladies they interviewed for the book share what they learned the hard way and Collini shares what she has learned from the recovery experiences of the hundreds of patients she has interacted with at her husband’s clinic.

I recommend this book for women who are just beginning to consider if plastic surgery procedure like a facelift, tummy tuck or liposuction is right for them.
