Book Review: Two Girlfriends Get Real About Cosmetic Surgery: A woman-to-woman guide to today's most popular cosmetic procedures

Should I Have a Tummy Tuck, Facelift or Liposuction?

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

I recently read a very well-known book about plastic surgery titled ‘Two Girlfriends Get Real About Cosmetic Surgery: A woman-to-woman guide to today's most popular cosmetic procedures.’
The “girlfriends” are Charlee Ganny, a plastic surgery client and Susan J. Collini, who has experience managing a plastic surgery practice. The book, published in 2000, provides overviews of plastic surgery procedures including liposuction, tummy tucks, and facelifts. What is there to learn from a book that was published over 16 years ago? Though plastic surgery is becoming more accepted, especially in the San Diego area, the authors’ experience of deciding if surgery is right for them and dealing with the reactions of friends and family members feels like it could have been written in 2017. Read this book to learn from their perspective, especially if you are a mother considering a tummy tuck or mommy makeover.

The girlfriends provide advice on liposuction, tummy tuck and facelift procedures both before surgery and for recovery after surgery. Of course, every patient should follow their plastic surgeon’s advice to the letter. The girlfriends and the ladies they interviewed for the book share what they learned the hard way and Collini shares what she has learned from the recovery experiences of the hundreds of patients she has interacted with at her husband’s clinic.

I recommend this book for women who are just beginning to consider if plastic surgery procedure like a facelift, tummy tuck or liposuction is right for them.
