Lymphatic Massage Testimonial Tuesday - Facelift in San Diego

Lymphatic Massage San Diego Testimonial Tuesday

I love getting testimonials from my clients, and Judy wanted to share so much with you she filled in the entire first side and had to turn the page over to the back!

“A week after my facelift, I got a hematoma and had significant swelling and stiffness -
very uncomfortable - while the surgeon said it would resolve - the day to day unpleasant /
uncomfortableness caused me to seek relief.

After the first massage - I had better range of motion and physically and mentally felt like I’d
reached a turning point. The following week I saw good improvements, where previously it
seemed like my body was just going to stay swollen and puffy for a long time.

I finally started to feel like myself again.

The massage was relaxing, for sure, but unlike sports massage that I’d had. I was skeptical about the drainage when I left, but that night my body definitely was processing fluid as I was up every few hours to pee. So, skepticism unfounded - and relief realized.”

Traveling to San Diego with Lymphedema - Testimonial Tuesday

MLD for Lymphedema while on vacation in San Diego

I met Jessi on the last day of her vacation in San Diego. She has lymphedema and loved biking, walking and enjoying the sights in San Diego, and that meant her leg was more swollen than usual. This is her testimonial:

I booked my appointment for MLD with Kathleen while visiting San Diego. I have lymphedema in my thigh and after airplane travel, extra walking in the heat, and some vacation food indulgences my thigh was swollen and heavy.

When Kathleen showed up at my hotel on time with her massage table and friendly smile, I immediately felt comfortable with her. She asked all the questions that showed me she knew her stuff, and listened carefully to my answers.

The MLD was excellent and some of the best I've had. The results were a leg that felt light, relieved, and back to its normal size. It can be nerve racking and difficult to find the right CLT and I am so grateful that I was able to find her on my vacation. What a gift!

I would whole heartedly recommend anyone who lives in or is visiting San Diego to book an appointment with her. When I am back in San Diego, I will definitely see her again.

Swelling around C-Section Scar in San Diego - Testimonial Tuesday

How to Reduce Swelling after a C-Section Scar in San Diego

Heather from San Diego had her beautiful baby a month before I saw her. She had swelling around her C-section scar and felt very tender in the area. Here is her testimonial:

Swelling has gone down significantly, although not 100%. The main thing I noticed is that the area surrounding the scar was not as tender after the massage and continues to decrease every day.

Plastic Surgery Recovery Shopping List

What to Buy for Plastic Surgery Recovery

How to Recover from Plastic Surgery

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

I had reconstructive surgery on my cheekbone after a skiing accident 8 years ago and I remember how completely unprepared I was to care for myself after I was discharged from the hospital. I did all the right things with my going-to-the-hospital bag, but I didn’t realize how completely out of it I would be in the days after the surgery. I was recovering alone in my apartment and ended up surviving on several bottles of Ensure. To this day I still won’t drink the stuff.

You can do better than I did! Here are some links to cosmetic surgery patients’ guides to preparing to recover after plastic surgery:

Do you really "need" a tummy tuck?

If you are thin, do you really "need" a tummy tuck?

lymphatic massage after tummy tuck
Should you get Tummy Tuck Surgery in San Diego, CA?

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT

I was at a Christmas party last year with my husband and the usual topic of conversation came up - "What do you do for a living?" When I told the beautiful slim blonde mother asking the question that I give manual lymphatic drainage massages to women in San Diego after plastic surgery procedures like facelifts, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers, her face flashed a look of knowing.

She knew why a woman would have a tummy tuck after having children. She knew what exercise could reduce and what all the ab workouts in the world could not fix.

With properly tailored clothing, spanx and running outfits that strategically cover the tummy area, many women are hiding the effects of having their children (especially twins and triplets) from the world. The only person who knows is the one looking in the mirror.

I thought of this conversation again today when I saw a tweet by plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Perlman  @DrJonPerlman about this woman's question on Real Self - "Is there a recommended minimum weight requirement for tummy tuck?" Her photo says it all - a woman who is slim, who works out, but still has loose skin and stretch marks in the abdomen area. Her photo and story are here: https://www.realself.com/question/temecula-ca-recommended-minimum-weight-requirement-tummy-tuck#4168730

I was glad to read that several plastic surgeons said she was, in fact, a good candidate for a tummy tuck.
There was no judgement, no "you look great to everyone else, ignore how you feel when you look in the mirror at yourself?" With more and more people, from celebrities to social media 'friends,' opening up about their successful experiences with plastic surgery, it's easier to gather tips, referrals and support from experts and loved ones and make the best decision for your body, mind and spirit.

Why I Love Manual Lymphatic Drainage

My clients are the happiest people in San Diego. They have beautiful families and the infectious newfound confidence that comes with investing in themselves, using plastic surgery to make their bodies match the person inside. I see, over and over again, that my clients are really pleased with their results because they took time researching plastic surgeons and chose the best. They are excited to get back to their lives, but feel heavy and tight. Yes, this is totally normal and will go down with time, but they want to feel better faster with Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage.

Manual lymphatic drainage or lymphatic massage helps after surgery to reduce the feelings of swelling - tightness and heaviness - and bring relaxation and stress relief. Visit SolaceSanDiego.com to book your manual lymphatic drainage massage appointment.

3 Quick Neck Exercises to Increase Lymphatic Flow in the Face

Neck Exercises to Increase Lymphatic Flow in the Face

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

As a Board Certified Massage Therapist practicing in San Diego, I see men and women who are looking to reduce that tight feeling that is caused by swelling after plastic surgery - but people who have not had facial plastic surgery can still help their lymphatic system with a manual lymphatic drainage treatment or self-MLD. I recommend the following exercises for improving lymphatic flow in the neck and face. Please consult with your doctor if you have had neck problems or before beginning any new exercise program.

I recommend the following exercises for improving lymphatic flow in the neck and face:

Ear to Shoulder - In a seated position with relaxed shoulders, bend the head to the side, exhaling and stretching your neck so that your ear is as close to the shoulder as comfortable. Inhale and return head to an upright postion and repeat on the other side.

Look to the Side - In a seated position with relaxed shoulders, inhale while turning the head to the side, being careful to keep the chin from tipping upward. Exhale and turn the head all the way to the other side, then inhale to return the head to center.

Look Up and Down - In a seated position with relaxed shoulders, inhale while looking up toward the ceiling. Open the mouth a little to make the position more comfortable, then exhale and look down toward the ground. Inhale and return the head to center.

All of the lymphatic fluid in the face drains into the neck. Having proper lymphatic flow in the neck is essential for a healthy lymphatic system in the face, and these simple exercises done a few times a day can stimulate lymphatic flow in the neck.

Will having Manual Lymphatic Drainage after orthopedic surgery help swelling?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage after orthopedic injury and surgery in San Diego

MLD after Surgery in San Diego

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, LMT

"Does MLD improve patient-oriented and disease-oriented outcomes for patients with orthopedic injuries?" This is the question posed by the study 'The Effectiveness of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Patients with Orthopedic Injuries' authored by Tricia Majewski-Schrage and Kelli Snyder and published in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation in 2016. The authors conducted a literature search for level 2 evidence or higher on the topic of MLD techniques effectively decreasing edema (swelling) and pain, increasing range of motion (ROM) and improving a patient's return to activities of daily living after orthopedic surgery.

Research has found that Manual Lymphatic Drainage after orthopedic surgery can:

  • Decrease edema (swelling)
  • Decrease pain
  • Decrease limb volume
  • Increase range of motion (ROM)
  • Improve a patient's return to activities of daily living

Though every well-educated massage therapist receives a few hours of training in MLD, advanced training is preferred. Ask you massage therapist if they have a certification in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, or ideally, a full certification as a CLT, or Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

Here is a link to print out the study and show your physician. Read the entire study here: http://journals.humankinetics.com/doi/pdf/10.1123/jsr.2014-0222

Does Dry Brushing Work?

Dry Brushing for Lymphatic System

by Kathleen Lisson, CMT, CLT

Dry brushing is the ritual of brushing the skin on the body with a specific type of brush in order to improve the skin and lymphatic system. Does it work and what are some tips to have the best results?

I first encountered dry brushing in massage school. We were told to buy dry brushes and practice dry brushing daily for a week. I saw improvement in the softness of my skin. Now that I have advanced training in manual lymphatic drainage, I am interested in the benefits of dry brushing for both the skin and lymph drainage.

What is the science behind dry brushing?

The Cleveland Clinic recommends dry brushing to promote lymph flow and drainage

The New York Times reports Dr. Tina S. Alster, a clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center finds that dry brushing helps the lymphatic system "work better."
Read more here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/16/fashion/16Skin.html

The University of Maryland Medical Center includes dry brushing on it's extensive list of ways to reduce fluid retention. Read more here: http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/condition/edema

Top 5 Tips on how to dry brush:

  • Make sure your dry brush has never been used (gotten wet) in the shower or bath. Keep a separate one just for brushing.
  • Dry brush before shower or bed, when skin is dry.
  • Don't brush too much! Stop when skin becomes sensitive or turns red.
  • Moisturize after you dry brush (after you shower).

Do you dry brush? Tell me about your experience in the comments below.
